A carrier screen to help you grow your family with confidence.
Gene By Gene's Carrier Screen provides you with information on your risk of having a baby with a genetic condition. Our carrier screening panel tests for 253 autosomal recessive and X-linked recessive conditions, including all of the conditions recommended by the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) and the American Congress of the Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Many of the conditions included in our panel impact quality of life (i.e. cause intellectual disability and/or a shortened life expectancy). Gene By Gene’s Carrier Screen was developed using a rigorous validation process that enables us to provide you with highly accurate results, giving you confidence while planning your growing family.
*X-linked conditions are not analyzed in males.
Our screening process offers the ease and simplicity of sample collection with a cheek swab, providing a minimally invasive approach to DNA collection. Gene by Gene's proprietary swab offers high accuracy and unmatched sample quality.
Results are delivered in a simple report that is easily read and understood. The first page of each report summarizes findings, and the following pages give detailed information on any of the condition(s) for which you tested positive as a carrier.
Every patient has access to complimentary genetic counseling provided to you by Gene By Gene. Our genetic counselors are certified by the American Board of Genetic Counselors. During your scheduled appointment, our genetic counselors will review your report with you to help you understand your results as well as discuss your potential next steps.

You and your healthcare provider make the decision to order genetic carrier screening.
Gene By Gene's carrier screen is performed off a simple cheek swab.
Following sample collection, your sample will be sent to Gene By Gene's laboratory.
Your results will be ready 2 weeks after we receive your sample.
If your results indicate that you are a carrier for a condition tested, we offer complimentary genetic counseling to review your results and discuss next steps.
If you have any questions regarding your anticipated costs or if you have questions or concerns upon receiving your bill, please contact us.
We will gladly bill your insurance company for tests performed by our company. All required billing information must be supplied before any testing can be performed. Once the information has been verified, we will bill the appropriate codes to your insurance company. As the provider of services, we will make every effort to ensure that we bill correctly using the information you have provided to us. If a pre-authorization is required, we will be happy to do that on your behalf; however, pre-authorization does not guarantee payment. Your particular insurance company determines payment and the charges you will be billed.
Please note that your insurance company may send payment to you instead of to us.If you receive payment from your insurance company, it is your responsibility to notify us, and we expect you to send the appropriate amount to us as soon as possible. When you receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurance company, remember this is not a bill. It is a notification of how they determined payment, and they are best equipped to answer questions about it. Please call us with questions if your insurance company is unable to help you. After their determination and payment, you may receive a bill from us for any balance due. Your responsibility may include co-payments, coinsurance, and/or deductibles for non-covered charges.
Many tests for rare diseases require the use of the CPT code 81479, which may result in some denial of coverage. Please be aware that there is a possibility of insurance denials of claims submitted.
The self-pay rate is for patients who do not have insurance. Please call our billing department for advance notification of the fee for your specific test.
Regardless of the method of payment agreed upon, we strive to offer low and affordable healthcare. We do have payment options and a Patient Assistance Program to help those in need of assistance. A call to our billing department is suggested to discuss these options. Please call 713-474-2401, option #4.
